Paul Merson: Why Chelsea will beat Southampton on Saturday

Paul Merson says Chelsea simply have to beat Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday

Paul Merson is tipping Chelsea to secure victory over Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening – because they cannot afford to drop any more points.

The Blues’ disastrous start to the new campaign continued in midweek as they slipped to a 2-1 loss to FC Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

That was Chelsea’s fifth defeat of the season in all competitions and Jose Mourinho’s men head into Saturday’s game in 15th place in the Premier League table.

The pressure has been mounting on the Portuguese coach in recent weeks, but former Arsenal star Merson feels that Chelsea are set to return to winning ways in the top flight by beating the Saints in west London on Saturday evening.

Merson told Sky Sports: “Chelsea simply have to win this game, they have to win. They have to come good sooner or later. Chelsea did OK at Porto in the Champions League. They could have a got a draw out of the game which would have been a decent result.

“There wasn’t a lot wrong with the performance but they lost again and when you get into these ruts you lose games that you shouldn’t be losing.

“I expect them to turn the corner in what is a must-win game before the international break.”

The Blues, who have only won two Premier League games so far this season, were forced to come back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw at Newcastle last weekend.
