The Merseyside outfit were held to a 1-1 draw by Rubin Kazan in the Europa League on Thursday night in Klopp’s first home game since being appointed as Brendan Rodgers’ successor at Anfield.
Klopp watched his side play out a goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur in their first Premier League game under the German coach last weekend.
However, former Arsenal star Merson feels that the Reds are on course to revive their top-flight form by beating Ronald Koeman’s men at Anfield this weekend.
Merson told Sky Sports: “This is another big game. Jurgen Klopp made a good start to his Liverpool career drawing away at Spurs, they’ve only lost one game this season and White Hart Lane is a tough place to go.
“It will take Klopp time to get things right, he wants to play at a tempo and Liverpool weren’t playing that way prior to his appointment.
“This is going to be another tough test, Southampton were brilliant at Chelsea, very good in the first half against Leicester and they could hurt Liverpool.
“I wouldn’t be shocked if this ended in a draw but I fancy Liverpool to get the win.”
Liverpool head into Sunday’s game in 10th place in the Premier League table, having taken 13 points from their opening nine games.
Southampton, meanwhile, are eighth and level on points with the Merseyside outfit with a superior goal difference.
