Paul Merson: Why Man United can secure ‘huge’ derby win over Man City
Former Arsenal star Paul Merson is backing Manchester United to secure a huge victory over Manchester City
Paul Merson believes Manchester United can secure a huge derby win over Manchester City at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils face the Premier League leaders on Sunday afternoon after a 1-1 draw with CSKA Moscow in Russia in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
If you’re a Man United fan you would be more than happy if Kompany doesn’t play because the two centre-halves on Wednesday were all over the place. They are going to give Man United chances
Manuel Pellegrini’s City side, meanwhile, were dramatic 2-1 winners against Sevilla at The Etihad thanks to Kevin De Bruyne’s late winner.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, former Arsenal midfielder Merson backed United to beat the Citizens on Sunday afternoon.
“A win in the derby would be massive for United,” Merson told Sky Sports News. “They have a hard month and they started off with a great result at Everton.
“If they can beat Man City they are massive players in the title race. I don’t see Man United losing this game.”
Merson added that United have more tactical nous than their neighbours which should work in the 20-time English champions’s favour in Sunday’s derby.
“I watched them [Man City] against Sevilla [in the Champions League] and they turn up like they are playing Bournemouth every week – no disrespect to Bournemouth,” Merson added. “They just open the game up and if they do that against Man United then they could be picked off.
“They have to be a bit more tactically cute and not go in and say in ‘you have a shot, we have a shot’.
“If you’re a Man United fan you would be more than happy if Kompany doesn’t play because the two centre-halves on Wednesday were all over the place. They are going to give Man United chances.”
The Red Devils drew 1-1 with CSKA Moscow after 19-year-old France international Anthony Martial cancelled out Seydou Doumbia’s first-half strike.
United are a mere two points behind leaders City after collecting 19 points from a possible 27 after nine Premier League games.
