Paul Merson says Manchester United will play into Crystal Palace’s hands at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The Red Devils are looking to bounce back from a humiliating League Cup fourth-round exit on Wednesday after an emphatic defeat by Middlesbrough in the penalty shootout at Old Trafford.

United are lacking the consistency and they need to get back to winning ways, I just don’t see it happening this weekend

Alan Pardew’s weakened Palace were handsomely beaten 5-1 by Premier League leaders Manchester City to extend the Eagles’s winless run to three games in all competitions.

However, former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Palace’s pace can exploit United on the break as Louis van Gaal’s side look to keep pace with City and Arsenal at the top.

Merson told Sky Sports: “This is going to be a good, good game. Palace enter it on the back of a hiding at Man City in the League Cup which I don’t understand because they’re not going to get relegated, win the league or get into the top four so surely it should have been taken seriously.

“Saying that, I feel this game plays into their hands because United will have a go, allowing Palace to utilise their pace.”

Merson continued: “The Manchester derby was poor last weekend and to then go out of the cup to Middlesbrough only made things worse.

“United are lacking the consistency and they need to get back to winning ways, I just don’t see it happening this weekend.”

United played out a goalless draw with bitter rivals City in Sunday’s derby at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have earned four points in their last three games after a heavy 3-0 defeat by Arsenal at Emirates Stadium earlier this month.
