Paul Scholes fires warning to Arsenal over Wayne Rooney
Paul Scholes says Wayne Rooney will be desperate to impress for Manchester United at Arsenal
Paul Scholes has warned that Wayne Rooney will be out to prove a point when Manchester United head to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils captain endured a quiet night as United ran out 2-1 winners over Wolfsburg in the Champions League group stage on Wednesday night.
Goals from Juan Mata and Chris Smalling handed Louis van Gaal’s men their first victory of the group stage at Old Trafford after they had fallen behind to Daniel Caligiuri’s opener.
But United legend Scholes feels that his uninspiring performance against Wolfsburg will only serve to galvanise him ahead of Sunday’s showdown at Emirates Stadium.
Scholes said on BT Sport after Wednesday’s game: “He didn’t have his best night, we all saw that, but we know what Wayne’s capable of – if he plays a full season he’s going to score 20-25 goals.
“It probably wasn’t his best night but he’s the type of player that can have a bad night and then go and score two or three goals on Sunday – let’s hope he does that.”
United head into Sunday’s game top of the Premier League table after their 3-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford last weekend.
A win for Arsenal would move Arsene Wenger’s men level on points with the Red Devils in the table.
