Petr Cech: Why under-fire Arsenal goalkeeeper deserves more games
The Arsenal number one leaps to the defence of under-fire David Ospina
Petr Cech says Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina deserves more game time despite his error-strewn display in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The Colombia international started ahead of Arsene Wenger’s summer signing for the visit of Olympiacos, despite the Gunners requiring victory after a 2-1 defeat by Dinamo Zagreb in their group-stage opener.
He deserves to have games, and this is what the manager appreciated from him. So let’s see what happens in the games as we go
Ospina, who has been demoted to second-choice behind Cech for their Premier League games, made an error for Olympiacos’s second goal in a surprise 3-2 victory over Arsenal in north London.
Ospina and Wenger have been heavily criticised following the result, but Czech Republic international Cech has defended his fellow Arsenal goalkeeper, insisting the Colombian has the trust of his team-mates.
“As a club we are lucky that we have goalkeepers the manager trusts and then that’s why he chooses for each game, as the season goes,” Cech told The Sun.
“In the first game in Zagreb, David had the chance to play and I think it shows how much the team has confidence in him and how well he trains and prepares every day.”
“He deserves to have games, and this is what the manager appreciated from him. So let’s see what happens in the games as we go.”
Arsenal summer signing Cech has conceded seven goals in seven games in the Premier League this season.
The 33-year-old has kept three clean sheets, though, denying Newcastle United, Liverpool and Stoke City.
