Phil Jones runs rule over Man United partnership with Chris Smalling
Manchester United defender Phil Jones is hoping to forge successful centre-half partnership with Chris Smalling
Phil Jones says he can form a successful centre-half partnership with Manchester United team-mate Chris Smalling.
The Red Devils defender returned to Louis van Gaal’s starting line-up in recent weeks after Jones made his second start of the Premier League season in a goalless draw with Manchester City in Sunday’s derby.
Jones has missed a staggering 59 games over the past few years due to a string of injury problems which limited the impact of the highly-rated England international under David Moyes and his successor Van Gaal.
The United defender reassured the Red Devils supporters that he will improve alongside Smalling with the more games that the former Blackburn Rovers centre-half gets under his belt this season.
“The more games you play, the more confident you get and I think Chris has been terrific this season and hopefully we can cement a partnership together,” Jones told Sky Sports.
Jones has completed 90 minutes in three successive games in all competitions as United secured victory over Everton and drew with CSKA Moscow and City.
The Red Devils are in fourth place and two points behind leaders City.
