Phil Thompson: Liverpool acted to get Jurgen Klopp ahead of Chelsea
The Liverpool legend reckons the Reds were worried Chelsea could appoint Jurgen Klopp if Jose Mourinho goes
Phil Thompson has claimed that Liverpool sacked Brendan Rodgers at the weekend in case Chelsea get rid of Jose Mourinho and move for Jurgen Klopp.
The former Borussia Dortmund manager is the hot favourite to succeed the Northern Irishman in the Anfield role after Rodgers’s three-and-a-half year reign was brought to an end.
Whether it’s Klopp or Ancelotti, I think the deal will already be done, and they will just be making sure everything is in place
Mourinho is currently facing a battle to resurrect Chelsea’s season after a fourth defeat of the season left the defending champions languishing in 16th place in the Premier League.
And former Liverpool captain reckons the Reds owners were worried Chelsea could provide competition for Klopp in the coming weeks if Mourinho does get the chop.
Thompson told Sky Sports: “If Chelsea make a knee-jerk reaction with Jose Mourinho, who would they be looking at? Maybe Ancelotti again, certainly Jurgen Klopp would come into that.
“I think Liverpool have looked into that, and thought, ‘My goodness, we have to make a move now’.
“I believe they have looked and probably already done the deal for it, and that is why they have made the decision [to sack Rodgers].
“Whether it’s Klopp or Ancelotti, I think the deal will already be done, and they will just be making sure everything is in place.”
Klopp took Dortmund to six in his first season in 2009, led them into the Europa League the next year and then, with a squad full of exciting young talent, oversaw league title wins in 2010-11 and 2011-12, adding the German Cup in the latter campaign.
He earned even greater admiration in the 2012-13 season as he steered Dortmund all the way to the Champions League final at Wembley, where they lost to Bayern Munich. Dortmund reached another domestic cup final in 2014, but again came up short against Bayern.
