Phil Thompson: Why Liverpool should appoint Jurgen Klopp
The former Liverpool captain says he would prefer Jurgen Klopp ahead of Carlo Ancelotti
Phil Thompson says Jurgen Klopp fits the bill for Liverpool.
The charismatic German coach is the heavy favourite to be named as Liverpool’s new manager ahead of ex-Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti.
“Klopp fits the bill for Liverpool and I think he would relish it
The Merseyside outfit sacked Northern Irishman Brendan Rodgers after a 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison Park in the Merseyside derby on Sunday afternoon.
And former Liverpool captain Thompson reckons Klopp would relish the challenge of guiding the Reds back into the top four.
“Klopp has the charisma and the character that I think all Liverpool fans would be delighted with,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“It’s amazing when you look at what Dortmund did, yes they are a big club, maybe a bit in the mould of an Anfield with the flags and the scarfs. It fits the bill with Klopp.
“I’m pushing towards Klopp rather than Ancelotti now – Ancelotti likes to go into a football club that’s maybe more of a finished article and help.

Klopp took Dortmund to six in his first season in 2009, led them into the Europa League the next year and then, with a squad full of exciting young talent, oversaw league title wins in 2010-11 and 2011-12, adding the German Cup in the latter campaign.
He earned even greater admiration in the 2012-13 season as he steered Dortmund all the way to the Champions League final at Wembley, where they lost to Bayern Munich. Dortmund reached another domestic cup final in 2014, but again came up short against Bayern.
