Per Mertesacker is affectionately known as the BFG (Big Friendly Gooner) and the Arsenal centre-half lived up to his reputation in a session with Junior Gunners on Thursday.

The Germany international had plenty to smile about after he helped the north London side keep a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Mertesacker, who has captained Arsenal in the absence of club skipper Mikel Arteta, met some young Gooners at a club event ahead of the visit of Everton at Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Arsenal have kept three successive clean sheets in all competitions after victories over Manchester United, Watford and Bayern Munich.

Arsene Wenger’s side can move to the top of the Premier League table if the Gunners can beat Everton in north London on Saturday evening.
