Matteo Darmian has described scoring his first goal for Italy on Saturday night as “pure joy”.

The Manchester United defender netted the Italian national team’s third goal in a 3-1 victory over Azerbaijan in their Euro 2016 qualifier in Baku.

Darmian was the final Italian player to get on the score sheet after Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti and AC Milan forward Stephan El Sharaawy.

And the United full-back, who has enjoyed a largely promising start to his Old Trafford career, reflected on his landmark goal which helped Italy reach Euro 2016 on his Instagram page.

Darmian wrote on the photo-sharing app: “Pure joy. Mission complete. #euro2016”

The Italian defender has started all eight of United’s Premier League games so far this season, racking up 610 top-flight minutes.

Darmian moved to the 20-time English champions in a £12.7m deal from Torino to United in the summer transfer window.
