Piers Morgan has taken to social media to poke fun at Robin van Persie after the striker was unable to help fire the Netherlands to Euro 2016 qualification.

Holland missed out on a spot at next summer’s tournament in France after Van Persie scored an own-goal in the 3-2 defeat by the Czech Republic on Tuesday night.

The Netherlands needed a win to earn a play-off spot but Danny Blind’s men slumped to a home defeat, despite Van Persie’s late goal in the 83rd minute after Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s 70th-minute opener.

Arsenal shareholder and celebrity supporter Morgan could not help but aim a dig at the former Gunners captain, who left Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

Morgan tweeted:

Van Persie helped Manchester United win the Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson after opting to leave Arsenal to join their rivals in the summer of 2012.

However, he was deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford by Louis van Gaal this summer as he sealed a move to Turkish side Fenerbahce.
