Rodgers delivers latest Liverpool injury update ahead of Everton clash

Christian Benteke will undergo a late fitness test ahead of Liverpool's derby clash with Everton on Sunday

Christian Benteke will undergo a late fitness test ahead of Liverpool’s derby clash with Everton on Sunday, Brendan Rodgers has revealed.

The Belgian striker has missed the Reds’ last three games with a hamstring injury and faces a race against the clock to be fit for the trip to Goodison Park this weekend.

Liverpool will, however, welcome striker Daniel Sturridge back to the fold after the forward was rested for the midweek Europa League clash with Sion at Anfield.

Speaking at his pre-match news conference at Melwood on Friday morning, Rodgers said: “There’s no real change [to our squad]. We obviously had one or two knocks last night.

“We’re seeing how Christian Benteke is over the course of the next 24 hours. Apart from that, the squad will be pretty much the same as the Aston Villa game.”

Asked about Sturridge, he continued: “It’s just about managing Daniel’s fitness. He’s been out for a real long time, he’s come back early through the work and the effort he’s put in and with so many games, we just have to make sure we look after him.

“He’s still looking to get to full match fitness. There’ll come a point where he will be available to play in all of the games, or certainly be available for them.

“He’s fresh and fit and looking forward to the game this weekend.”

Liverpool, who drew 1-1 with Sion on Thursday night, head into Sunday’s game looking for a victory to leapfrog their local rivals in the Premier League table.

The Reds are currently in ninth place in the top flight, after having taken 11 points from their opening seven games.

Everton, meanwhile, are a point ahead of their bitter rivals in fifth place in the table.
