Theo Walcott: Why Arsenal star Mesut Ozil is special player
The Arsenal forward is confident he can strike up understanding with club-record signing
Theo Walcott has hailed Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil as a “special player”.
The England international has enjoyed a run in Arsene Wenger’s starting line-up over the past few weeks, and as a result, has started to build a relationship with Ozil.
He looks first before he gets the ball and he knows where he’s going to play it before he’s even got it. That just shows the sort of quality we have in this team
The Arsenal club-record signing teed up Walcott for his strike in a 2-0 win against Stoke City, while the World Cup winner was heavily involved in the forward’s equaliser in a 5-2 victory over Leicester City.
And Walcott, who is expected to line up against Manchester United at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon, lifted the lid on the understanding between the Arsenal stars.
“He can do it anywhere on the pitch, he’s a threat from anywhere,” Walcott told Arsenal’s website.
“Mesut’s involvement in the Stoke goal sums it up and also shows what he can do for this team. He makes football look easy and he’s a special player.
“When you’ve got that in your dressing room you can build on it. The first thing he does when he has the ball, in fact when he hasn’t even got the ball, is that he looks.
“He looks first before he gets the ball and he knows where he’s going to play it before he’s even got it. That just shows the sort of quality we have in this team.
“I know what he’s going to do now when he’s got the ball, I just need to keep making those runs and hopefully we can get that relationship going.”
Ozil, who moved to Arsenal from Real Madrid in August 2013, has made three assists in six Premier League appearances this season.
Walcott, who has been keeping Olivier Giroud out of Wenger’s starting line-up, has netted four goals in eight appearances in all competitions for the north London side.
