Thierry Henry believes that Arsenal should look at bringing in a new holding midfielder during the January transfer window to boost their title hopes.

The Gunners have enjoyed a positive start to the new campaign after slumping to a surprise 2-0 loss to West Ham United on the opening weekend of the season.

Arsene Wenger’s men are second in the Premier League and level on points with leaders Manchester City, who are just ahead of the Gunners on goal difference.

Francis Coquelin has made the holding midfield role his own in recent months and has enjoyed an impressive start to the season in that position.

However, former Arsenal striker Henry feels that the north London club would be wise to bring in cover for Coquelin when the winter transfer window opens on 2 January.

Henry told Sky Sports: “Everyone was calling for Arsene Wenger to go and buy a holding midfielder. He didn’t and Mikel Arteta is still there. Is he the same as Coquelin? Not any more, I don’t think.

“Maybe they can get someone in January to back up Coquelin if he gets injured.

“Having said that, Mathieu Flamini put in an amazing performance away at Tottenham and he showed he can be there.”

Arsenal take on Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Tuesday night in the League Cup fourth round.
