Thierry Henry: Why this Man United star could end up as captain
Thierry Henry discusses Chris Smalling's impressive form for Manchester United this season
Thierry Henry has suggested that Chris Smalling has all of the necessary ingredients to captain Manchester United in the future.
The Red Devils centre-half has been a regular fixture in Louis van Gaal’s first-team this season, starting all 10 of United’s Premier League games to help them up to fourth in the table and to within two points of leaders Manchester City.
Smalling has notched up one assists for his team-mates in the Premier League and also scored the winner as Van Gaal’s men beat Wolfsburg in the Champions League last month.
And former Arsenal striker Henry says that he has been thoroughly impressed by what he has seen from the England international in recent weeks.
Henry told Sky Sports: “I didn’t know what sort of player he was going to become, but right now I see that he wants to command.
“I see that he wants to be that leader, I see he wants to become that defender that puts his head in, who makes tackles, and more importantly for me, he wants to be the guy in command.
“He talks, he wants that ball, he drives. He’s not scared and he actually now embraces that role.”
Smalling will be hoping to feature when United turn their attentions back to Premier League affairs with a trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
He played the full 90 minutes as United were knocked out of the League Cup on penalties by Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.
