Louis van Gaal has revealed that Antonio Valencia suffered a foot injury during Manchester United’s goalless draw with Manchester City on Sunday.

The Ecuadorian suffered the problem during the first half at Old Trafford yet played on until the 81st minute during the Manchester derby showdown.

Valencia was eventually brought off for Matteo Darmian with nine minutes left to play, and Van Gaal confirmed that the winger had suffered a foot problem during the game.

Van Gaal told his post-match news conference: “He had a kick on his foot in the first half and then I let Darmian warm up on the touchline.

“But then he played further. However, at the end, he could not continue.”

United’s next game is a League Cup fourth round clash with Middlesbrough before their trip to Crystal Palace in the Premier League next weekend.

Sunday’s draw left United fourth in the Premier League table and two points behind local rivals City, who moved back top ahead of Arsenal on goal difference.

Manuel Pellegrini’s league leaders host Norwich City at Etihad Stadium next weekend as they look to keep their place at the top of the table.
