Alan Pardew explains how to stop Louis van Gaal’s Man United
Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew says stopping Anthony Martial is the key to preventing Man United playing
Alan Pardew says stopping Anthony Martial is the key to preventing Manchester United getting the upper-hand in games.
The Crystal Palace manager managed to successfully nullify the France international at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon after the Eagles secured a goalless draw.
Martial did create one chance for United skipper Wayne Rooney but the 30-year-old was unable to control the ball before Julian Speroni smothered the pass.
Palace manager Pardew, whose Eagles are just five points behind United, was pleased with his side’s ability to limit the 19-year-old’s influence on the stalemate.
“We didn’t give Martial an inch,” Pardew told his post-match media conference. “Not an inch.
“It was a big target for us to stop him and we felt that if we could stop him we could stop their creative angle.
“And when you take into account his age, that’s some recommendation.
“I have to say that he’s an impressive young player. I think he handled himself very well today, because he would have felt our presence around him, and still he had moments in the game.
“With such a young player, he’ll have to be very, very careful, the Manchester United manager, to keep his exuberance there. Because we’re all looking to stop him.”
Martial has scored three times and made one assist in seven Premier League games following his £36m summer move.
The French teenager has also scored in the League Cup and the Champions League for the 20-time English champions this season.
Palace make the trip to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side at Anfield in their next Premier League game on Sunday afternoon.
