Ander Herrera believes that Manchester United’s recent solid defensive form shows that Louis van Gaal’s men are ready to challenge for silverware this season.

The Red Devils have come in for plenty of criticism in recent weeks for their failure to score goals, with Wayne Rooney netting the club’s first strike in 404 minutes of football in the 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night.

United were held to three consecutive goalless draws before Tuesday’s win.

However, Spanish midfielder Herrera believes that the fact that United are not conceding many goals underlines their overall improvement under Louis van Gaal, and pointed to last season’s champions Chelsea as a prime example of a side who built their title triumph from the back.

Herrera told United’s website: “It’s a positive that we’re not conceding goals.

“We saw it last year with Chelsea; I don’t think they scored too many goals, but they didn’t concede many either. That’s important when you want to have a great season, you can’t give away many chances.

“I think we controlled the game against Moscow. We only conceded one chance, which was good. We also created 10 or 12 chances, which was also good – we want to control games and did that today.”

United now turn their attentions back to the Premier League and their home clash with West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon. United are fourth in the table.
