Kieran Gibbs will struggle to dislodge in-form Nacho Monreal at the moment, according to Nigel Winterburn.

The England international came off the bench to score a late equaliser in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s north London derby.

Gibbs has been limited to five substitute appearances in the Premier League this season, although the 26-year-old has started two Champions League and League Cup games.

But former Arsenal left-back Winterburn believes Spain international Monreal will continue to shine in the left-back position after an impressive year for the 29-year-old.

“Monreal has been outstanding for the last six months really,” Winterburn told Arsenal’s podcast.

“So Gibbs has to wait for his opportunity and take it when he comes in. It is going to be hard for him at the moment because Monreal is playing so well.”

Monreal has started all 12 of Arsenal’s Premier League games this season.
