Paul Merson believes that Tottenham Hotspur will finish third in the Premier League this season to qualify directly for the group stage of next season’s Champions League.

Spurs earned plenty of praise for their impressive performance against local rivals Arsenal on Sunday afternoon as they held Arsene Wenger’s men to a 1-1 draw at Emirates Stadium.

I definitely think they’ll finish above Manchester United

Mauricio Pochettino’s men are currently fifth in the Premier League table and five points behind leaders Manchester City after 12 games.

And former Arsenal man Merson feels that Spurs have what it takes to break back into the top four this season and qualify for next year’s Champions League.

The former midfielder also reckons that Manchester United will drop out of the top four this season.

Merson told Sky Sports News HQ: “I know a lot of people are going to be surprised with this one but I’m going with Tottenham.

“I’ve been very impressed with them and they’ve completely changed my opinion. What they did at The Emirates was phenomenal.

“They’ve got a great young squad and a very, very good manager in Mauricio Pochettino. The key for them is their best players need to stay fit.

“People have got to start respecting Tottenham and I definitely think they’ll finish above Manchester United.”

Tottenham return to Premier League action with a home clash against West Ham United at White Hart Lane after the international break on Sunday 22 November.
