Asmir Begovic says the Chelsea squad are fully behind manager Jose Mourinho after a 1-0 defeat by Stoke City on Saturday evening.

The Blues slumped to their seventh defeat of the Premier League season after Stoke midfielder Marko Arnautovi’s acrobatic 53rd-minute finish at Britannia Stadium.

We’re behind the manager and you can see from our performances we are fighting for one another and for everybody involved

Defending champions Chelsea are in 16th position in the Premier League after their seventh loss in 12 games and just three points clear of the relegation zone.

But Begovic, who faced his former employers Stoke at the weekend, insisted that Chelsea’s luck has to turn after another controversial defeat in the absence of banned Mourinho.

“The manager did the pre-match talk at the hotel. His spirit and his presence is always there; he’s always around us and he prepared us well,” Begovic told Chelsea’s website.

“We’re behind the manager and you can see from our performances we are fighting for one another and for everybody involved. From our point of view, we think he’s the right man and he’s obviously somebody we respect and work hard for. It’s just unfortunate that we’re not giving him the results that our performances deserve at this moment.

“You can see from the game today it’s not a simple thing, it’s not something you can pinpoint – it’s just a collection of things. When things aren’t going your way, they’re not going your way and you just get punished for little bits and pieces. We just have to keep playing like we are and it eventually has to turn.”
Chelsea won a fourth Premier League title last season.

The west London side are already 14 points behind leaders Manchester City heading into the international break.
