Xavi has backed Jack Wilshere to develop into one of the best midfielders in Europe once the Arsenal midfielder has recovered from his latest injury setback.

The 23-year-old has suffered yet another setback in his Gunners career this season after requiring surgery to correct a hairline fracture in his leg which has prevented him from featuring this term.

Wilshere is not expected to be back available for selection for Arsenal until January at the earliest.

However, Barcelona legend Xavi is tipping the England youngster to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe – as long as he can stay injury free.

Xavi is quoted as saying by Metro: “If he had a career that was injury-free we would have already been talking about him as one of the top central midfielders in Europe.

“I have played against him, I have watched him carefully, and if he can overcome injuries, then he can still go and be one of the best midfield players in the world.

“With all respect, he doesn’t play the English way.

“He has an excellent passing range, an ability not to lose the ball, it is clear that he has had his education at Arsenal.

“For many years now the one position England have not struggled with is world-class midfield players. Scholes, and then more recently Lampard and Gerrard.

“Now I see Wilshere as the future of English football, that is why it is so important they keep him fit.”

Arsenal are currently second in the Premier League table after their 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s north London derby at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners travel to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Saturday 21 November after the international break.
