Bastian Schweinsteiger paid tribute to David De Gea after Manchester United's dramatic 2-1 win at Watford
Bastian Schweinsteiger singled out David De Gea for special praise after Manchester United secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Watford on Saturday lunchtime.
The Red Devils sealed a thrilling victory at Vicarage Road to lift Louis van Gaal’s men to the top of the Premier League table ahead of the rest of Saturday’s fixtures.
Memphis Depay – starting a Premier League match for the first time since October – netted the opener in the 11th minute when he volleyed home Ander Herrera’s cross.
However, the home side battled back and drew level when Troy Deeney smashed home an 89th-minute penalty after Marcos Rojo brought down Odion Ighalo in the box.
Schweinsteiger helped United secure the three points moments later, however, when the German’s ball across goal was bundled in by Deeney for an own-goal.
De Gea made a string of impressive saves for the Red Devils at Vicarage Road, and Schweinsteiger was full of praise for the Spain international after the game.
Schweinsteiger told BT Sport: “David De Gea is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
“We are happy that he stayed here, he made a lot of good saves and you need a good goalkeeper when you want to win something.”
The World Cup winner went on to praise United for showing the resilience to bounce back after the late equaliser.
He continued: “In football you always have 90-93 minutes. You always have to believe. There was a bit of luck but we are happy to get the three points.
“You have to sniff a little bit of danger, the angle was not so easy but of course he touched the ball.”
