Bayern Munich 5 Arsenal 1: Player ratings

Player ratings as Arsenal suffer a humbling 5-1 defeat by Bayern Munich

By Niall Griffiths

Petr Cech Despite conceding five on the night, the stopper prevented the scoreline from looking a lot worse for his side with fantastic saves throughout. 6/10

Mathieu Debuchy Looked unable to cope with the Bayern’s left flank of David Alaba and Kingsley Coman. Recovered somewhat in the second half and made a fantastic tackle on Arjen Robben when the Dutchman rounded Cech. 5

Per Mertesacker The captain suffered in the absence of his preferred partner Laurent Koscielny, and his distinct lack of pace was exposed by the explosiveness of Bayern’s frontline. 4

Gabriel Paulista Directly culpable for one goal and did little to help prevent Alaba’s, it’s safe to say that the defender standing in for stalwart Koscielny had a game to forget. 4

Nacho Monreal Had one of the hardest jobs of the night in trying to keep Douglas Costa quiet, which the left-back inevitably struggled with. 5

Francis Coquelin Much had been said before the game about his standing amongst Europe’s best holding midfielders, but the 24-year-old was hardly in the game and was another player not around to prevent Alaba’s goal. 5

Santi Cazorla The Spanish schemer was deployed in a deeper role to cover for the absence of Aaron Ramsey in the middle. Forced a great save from Manuel Neuer early in the second half before having a golden chance to score again as the game was winding down. 5

Joel Campbell Deputised for Debuchy in attempting to keep Bayern out on the right-hand side, and looked energetic after being given minutes by Arsene Wenger. Booked. 5

Mesut Ozil Arsenal’s brightest player on the night, the playmaker had a potential equaliser chalked off for handball. He showed glimpses of his true qualities when he got on the ball but these moments were few and far between. Booked. 7

Alexis Sanchez Key in the reverse fixture at the Emirates, the winger didn’t seem as committed to his defensive duties this time around. 6

Olivier Giroud The French forward cut an isolated figure at the tip of an Arsenal attack which saw little action in the first half. However when Sanchez chipped the ball into box, Giroud controlled the pass on his chest superbly before volleying in a consolation goal for his side. 6

Kieran Gibbs The makeshift left winger enjoyed a few visits to the Bayern penalty box, as well as a few fleeting touches. 5
