Belgium coach runs rule over Tottenham’s ‘improving’ Toby Alderweireld
Belgium head coach Marc Wilmots says Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld is his most important player
Marc Wilmots believes Tottenham Hotspur centre-half Toby Alderweireld is Belgium’s most-important player.
The Belgium international helped Mauricio Pochettino’s side secure a battling 1-1 draw with Arsenal in Sunday’s north London derby at The Emirates.
Alderweireld has started all 12 of Tottenham’s Premier League games alongside his former Ajax team-mates and Belgian compatriot Jan Vertonghen this season.
Belgium manager Wilmots believes the 26-year-old has improved since his summer move to Tottenham from La Liga side Atletico Madrid in a £11.5m deal.
Asked to name his most important player, Wilmots told RTBF: “For now, it’s Toby Alderweireld He has improved a lot, he is versatile, and he became one of my most regular selections.”
The Belgian centre-half scored his first goal for Tottenham in an impressive 4-1 victory over Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Alderweireld spent last season on loan at Southampton but opted to join Pochettino’s Spurs side ahead of Ronald Koeman’s Saints outfit.
Tottenham are in fifth place in the Premier League table but only five points behind leaders City ahead of the visit of West Ham United on 22 November.
