Carragher, Given and more: Twitter reacts as Rep of Ireland qualify for Euro 2016
Jamie Carragher and Shay Given both tweet their thoughts as the Republic of Ireland qualify for Euro 2016
The Republic of Ireland qualified for next year’s Euro 2016 tournament in france as two goals from Jon Walters helped them beat Bosnia-Herzegovina in the play-off second leg in Dublin.
Walters netted a controversial 24th-minute penalty after Bosnia’s Ervin Zukanovic was adjudged to have handled a Daryl Murphy cross.
That goal put Martin O’Neill’s men 2-1 up on aggregate, and the win was all but secured when Walters volleyed home in the 71st minute.
The Republic will join Northern Ireland, England and Wales in France at next summer’s tournament.
The big game at the Aviva inevitably prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are some of our favourite updates.
Jamie Carragher expresses his delight at seeing the Boys in Green qualify:
Delighted for Ireland & Walters but mainly for Martin O'Neil after the Sunderland job. Excellent managerial record over 25 years.
