Chelsea transfers: Gerard Pique runs rule over John Stones
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique says Chelsea target John Stones reminds him of Man United legend Rio Ferdinand
Gerard Pique says Chelsea target John Stones reminds him of Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand.
The Everton centre-half was the subject of two bids from the defending Premier League champions in them summer transfer window, although a big-money move failed to materialise as the Toffees held firm.
Now there is Stones, he’s one of the new generation who understand football not just as a defender
However, unsurprisingly, Chelsea are reportedly ready to resurrect their interest in the England international after Jose Mourinho’s defence has conceded 23 goals in just 12 Premier League games this term.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph about what qualities a modern-day centre-half needs to have, the Barcelona defender singled out 21-year-old Stones as one of the exciting defenders of the new generation.
“Now the position of the centre-back is not just about defending or being nasty or tough,” Pique told Daily Telegraph.
“It’s about knowing how to play football, control the ball, pass and be more comfortable in possession.
“And this is something that 10 years ago [in England] they didn’t understand. Rio was the first one who did it. And now there is Stones, he’s one of the new generation who understand football not just as a defender.”
Stones has made 10 Premier League appearances for the Merseyside outfit this season, racking up 900 minutes of first-team football.
Roberto Martinez’s Everton side are in ninth place and seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester United ahead of their next game against Aston Villa on 21 November.
