Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar are the three players on the shortlist for the 2015 Ballon d’Or world footballer of the year award.

It marks the eighth successive year that Real Madrid’s Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Messi have been on the shortlist. It is the first time that Neymar has made the final three.

Ronaldo has won the last two editions of the Ballon d’Or, ending Messi’s four-year hold on the award, which his regarded as the most prestigious individual prize in world football.

The three attackers were chosen from a 23-man list that also included Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola, Barcelona coach Luis Enrique Martínez and Chile manager Jorge Sampaoli have been nominated for the men’s world coach of the year award.

The winners will be announced at a gala in Zurich on 11 January.

All of the nominees were confirmed after a voting process, which was open to the captains and head coaches of the men’s and women’s national teams of the 207 member associations as well as international media representatives selected by Fifa and France Football.
