Former Man United coach likens Jesse Lingard to Barcelona legend

Rene Meulensteen says Jesse Lingard is the English Andres Iniesta

Jesse Lingard is the English version of Andres Iniesta, according to Rene Meulensteen.

The 22-year-old has become a feature of Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United side in recent weeks after he came on as a substitute in their 3-0 win at Everton last month.

Lingard scored his first Red Devils goal in a 2-0 win against West Bromwich Albion before he received a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the friendly against France.

Former United coach Meulensteen raised eyebrows after the Dutchman likened Lingard to Barcelona and Spain legend Iniesta after a whirlwind 35 days in the United first-team for the English youngster.

“I see him as the English version of Iniesta,” Meulensteen told United Review.

“He has still got a long way to go but that is the sort of player I see in him.”

The United youngster could line up against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Lingard has scored one goal in four Premier League appearances in all competitions for United this season.
