Former Man United midfielder criticises Liverpool star Adam Lallana
Ray Wilkins doesn't believe Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana deserves England starting spot
Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana doesn’t deserve a spot in the England side, according to Ray Wilkins.
Lallana lasted just 63 minutes of England’s 2-0 defeat by Spain in Alicante on Friday night after he finished with a pass success rate of 68 per cent and the playmaker was dispossessed five times.
I don’t think Lallana has done quite enough up to now to meet playing for England
The 27-year-old started for the Three Lions ahead of Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and in the absence of injured Arsenal duo Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott.
However, former Chelsea, Manchester United and England midfielder Wilkins questioned Roy Hodgson’s decision to hand Lallana a starting spot for the clash against La Roja.
“I don’t think Lallana really merits that spot at the moment, I have to say,” Wilkins told talkSPORT.
“I know this side has been hit with a couple of injuries in Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain especially in those wide areas, but I don’t think Lallana has done quite enough up to now to meet playing for England at the moment, especially in a game of this standing.”
Lallana has made one assist in eight Premier League appearances for Liverpool this season.
The former Southampton captain has scored twice in three Europa League for the Merseyside outfit.
Lallana moved to Liverpool in a £25m deal from Southampton last summer.
