Former Tottenham star: Why Spurs will finish in the top four
Brad Friedel is confident that Tottenham have what it takes to break back into the Champions League
Brad Friedel is tipping Tottenham Hotspur to make a return to the Champions League by finishing in the top four this season.
Spurs earned plenty of praise for their dominant performance against their bitter local rivals Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon as they sealed a 1-1 draw with the Gunners.
Harry Kane gave Mauricio Pochettino’s men the lead in north London before the visitors were eventually pegged back by Kieran Gibbs’ late goal.
However, Spurs were widely praised for their display as they signalled their top-four credentials in the derby clash.
And former Tottenham goalkeeper Friedel feels that the Lilywhites have what it takes to break back into the top four under Pochettino.
Friedel told talkSPORT: “I tip Tottenham to get into the top four this season, and that’s not because of my allegiance to them, I really believe in what Mauricio Pochettino is doing there.
“Mauricio Pochettino has done as wonderful job with instilling his philosophy and style of play with this Tottenham team.
“It’s high energy and they’ve got a very fit group of players, and the players Pochettino has kept have bought into his system. They believe in it.
“It’s not an easy system to play in, I can tell you from personal experience that it’s not easy training every day.
“It’s very enjoyable but it’s physically demanding and you have to stay on top of everything, your physical fitness and mentality, but he’s done a very good job and long may it continue.
“I don’t think anyone envisioned the problems Chelsea have had this season, but they’re well off the pace and there’s a great opportunity for Tottenham to get into the top four this season.”
Sunday’s result left Spurs fifth in the Premier League table and just three points behind fourth-placed Manchester United heading into the international break.
Tottenham take on West Ham United at White Hart Lane in their next game on Sunday 22 November.
