Gary Neville runs rule over Jurgen Klopp’s ‘devastating’ Liverpool
Gary Neville heaps praise on Liverpool's 'fantastic' performance at The Etihad
Gary Neville says Liverpool executed Jurgen Klopp’s game plan “brilliantly” in Saturday evening’s 4-1 victory over Manchester City.
The Reds eased into a seventh-minute lead after Eliaquim Mangala turned Roberto Firmino’s cross past City goalkeeper Joe Hart at The Etihad.
The game plan was executed brilliantly. Klopp will be delighted as he’d have worked on it all week and his team have gone and done it for him
In-form Philippe Coutinho added a second after a brilliant Reds move before Firmino scored his first Premier League goal in the 32nd minute.
While Sergio Aguero did give City a lifeline before half-time, Liverpool centre-half Martin Skrtel sealed three points with a stunning half volley.
Former Manchester United defender Neville was full of praise for Liverpool’s counter-attacking performance, adding that the Reds were devastating at times.
“They were fantastic,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“Even before they scored, we noticed the belief and their intent to pass the ball really quickly and brightly. City couldn’t cope – they looked really sluggish in the first half.
“People talk about the frantic press of Klopp’s teams and the pressing from the front. It wasn’t necessarily all about that against City – it was all about dropping off and then springing into counter-attacks.
“The transition was devastating from Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.
“They knew that City would spread their full-backs wide and their wingers would go wide too, meaning the two centre-backs and central midfielders could get isolated.
“The game plan was executed brilliantly. Klopp will be delighted as he’d have worked on it all week and his team have gone and done it for him.”
Liverpool are six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal after the Gunners suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat by West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns earlier on Saturday.
The Reds are unbeaten on the road in the Premier League under Klopp after a stalemate with Tottenham Hotspur was followed by victories over Chelsea and Manchester City.
