Glenn Hoddle: Why Liverpool duo haven’t convinced me
Glenn Hoddle runs the rule over Liverpool midfielders Adam Lallana and James Milner
Glenn Hoddle says he isnt convinced Liverpool midfielders Adam Lallana and James Milner can provide England’s set-piece solution.
Lallana lasted just 63 minutes of England’s 2-0 defeat by Spain in Alicante on Friday night after he finished with a pass success rate of 68 per cent and the playmaker was dispossessed five times.
Liverpool vice-captain Milner wasn’t included in Roy Hodgson’s England squad as the former Manchester City midfielder continues to nurse a hamstring injury which he picked up on Reds duty.
However, former England manager Hoddle believes the Three Lions are lacking set-piece specialists, insisting Lallana and Milner aren’t viable options from corners and free-kicks.
“Another area for Roy to look at is set pieces. In knockout football at the highest level, games can often be decided by one well-delivered free-kick or corner,” Hoddle told Daily Mail.
“We were spoiled for many years by having David Beckham and Steven Gerrard. I’m looking for someone to put their hands up and demand to be the set-piece specialist. So far, I haven’t been convinced that James Milner, Adam Lallana and Barkley will put the ball on a plate at the big moments.”
Lallana has made one assist in eight Premier League appearances for Liverpool this season.
The former Southampton captain has scored twice in three Europa League for the Merseyside outfit.
Lallana moved to Liverpool in a £25m deal from Southampton last summer.
