Jamie Carragher: Jurgen Klopp has improved this Liverpool star
Jamie Carragher heaps praise on Liverpool defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva
Jamie Carragher believes Jurgen Klopp’s tactics are helping to improve Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva.
The Brazil international played a key role in the Merseyside outfit’s 4-1 victory over Manchester City at Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening.
If you look at his role now for Liverpool in terms of how many tackles he wins, he’s always at the top of that list
Lucas has been ever-present in Klopp’s side since the former Borussia Dortmund manager took over the reins at Anfield from Brendan Rodgers in October.
Carragher highlighted that Lucas won three tackles, made four interceptions and no midfielder on either side won possession more often at Eithad Stadium.
And the former Liverpool defender explained why Lucas is enjoying a revival under Klopp, whose side are six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.
“He’s played two less games too so that shows how vital he is and how much Klopp coming in has maybe improved those stats because he’s constantly going into challenges, pressing people and doing things that you wouldn’t expect from a normal holding midfield player,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“This is a player who at the start of the season wasn’t in the [match-day squad of] 18 but if you look at his role now for Liverpool in terms of how many tackles he wins, he’s always at the top of that list.”
Only Toulouse midfielder Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro has won more tackles than Lucas this season in the major European leagues.
Lucas, who moved to the Reds from Brazilian side Gremio in 2007, has made 11 Premier League appearances for the 18-time English champions this season.
