Jamie Carragher: Why Man United star Chris Smalling has proved me wrong
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says he was wrong about Man United centre-half Chris Smalling
Jamie Carragher says he has been proven wrong about Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.
The England international has become a key part of Louis van Gaal’s United side this season in the wake of injuries to his centre-half partners Daley Blind, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.
Smalling has started all 12 of the Red Devils’s Premier League games, whilst the 25-year-old has been a scored one goal in four Champions League group-stage games this season.
And former Liverpool centre-half Carragher admits he was wrong in his earlier assessment that former Fulham man Smalling couldn’t make it as United’s main defender.
Carragher told Daily Mail: “I once doubted whether he could be United’s main defender but he has proven me wrong.”
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown also named the United defender as one of his stars of the season so far.
Keown added: “The reason they keep so many clean sheets. He owns that defence. A future England captain?”
Smalling has made one assist in 12 Premier League games, whilst the centre-half has helped United concede just eight goals in the English top-flight.
Van Gaal’s men have kept five clean sheets in their last five games in all competitions.
The Red Devils are in fourth place but just two points behind leaders Manchester City.
