Jamie Redknapp fires warning at Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere over Tottenham star
Jamie Redknapp warns Jack Wilshere that Eric Dier is on course to challenge him for his England spot
Jamie Redknapp has warned Jack Wilshere that Eric Dier is poised to provide the Arsenal midfielder with some serious competition in the England squad.
Dier was in impressive form for the Three Lions as Roy Hodgson’s men secured a 2-0 friendly victory over France at Wembley on Tuesday night.
Wilshere’s place in the England squad for next summer’s European championships in France is already in doubt following the 23-year-old midfielder’s latest spell on the sidelines, this time with a hairline fracture of his leg.
And former Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder Redknapp feels that Dier is on course to challenge Wilshere for his place in Hodgson’s starting line-up in the coming months.
Redknapp wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “Eric Dier is the biggest pleasant surprise for Hodgson and he owes Mauricio Pochettino for that.
“At Spurs, Dier’s been transformed from a versatile defender into a powerful defensive midfielder.
“For me, there’s no doubt he will go to Euro 2016. Jack Wilshere now has competition for that place in front of the back four and I think Dier has a role to play, particularly against the big teams.”
Wilshere is not expected to be back in action for Arsenal until the new year after undergoing surgery at the start of the season. He has not yet featured for the Gunners this term.
