Jesse Lingard: Louis van Gaal told us to ignore Man United supporters
Jesse Lingard reveals Louis van Gaal instructed Man United players to ignore chants of negative fans on Tuesday night
Jesse Lingard has revealed that Louis van Gaal instructed his players to ignore the chants of negative Manchester United supporters at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils eased to their first win in four games since a 3-0 victory over Everton last month after Wayne Rooney scored a 79th-minute header to secure a 1-0 triumph over CSKA Moscow.
The 20-time English champions have been criticised for their conservative approach to games in recent weeks after a return of two goals in their last five games in all competitions.
However, United defender Lingard, who has enjoyed a run in the first-team in recent weeks, revealed that Van Gaal encouraged his players to shut out any negativity coming from the stands.
“I was trying to be as direct as I could and get the crowd on their feet,” Lingard is quoted as saying by Goal.com.
“Obviously I had to be direct at the right time, so we had to be patient sometimes. I’m glad the goal came.”
United hoisted themselves to the top of Champions League Group B thanks to their 1-0 win against CSKA Moscow.
The Red Devils welcome West Bromwich Albion to The Hawthorns in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
