Johnny Giles: Why Man United won’t win Premier League title
Johnny Giles says Manchester United aren't even defending that well
Manchester United won’t win the Premier League title this season despite their recent defensive record, according to Johnny Giles.
The Red Devils have scored a paltry six goals in their last eight games in all competitions as Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney struggle to find form up front.
However, Louis van Gaal’s side have been in impressive defensive form after having only conceded one goal in their last seven league games – and that came from the penalty spot.
But former United midfielder Giles believes much of the Red Devils’s success at the back is down to goalkeeper David De Gea.
“I don’t think they will,” Giles told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
“They’re not giving any goals away but 80 per cent of that is down to the goalkeeper. It isn’t like they’re defending really well.
“I don’t think they can continue the way they’re going.”
Van Gaal’s side are a point behind Premier League leaders Leicester City ahead of Saturday evening’s trip to King Power Stadium.
The 20-time English champions are unbeaten in their last five Premier League games since a 3-0 loss to Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on 4 October.
