Jose Mourinho sends blunt message to Diego Costa after Chelsea snub

Jose Mourinho warns Diego Costa that he will need to improve to win back his place in the Chelsea side

Jose Mourinho has warned Diego Costa that he will need to step up his performances for Chelsea if he wants to win back his place in the west London club’s starting line-up.

The Spain international was left on the bench for Sunday’s goalless draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane and appeared to throw his bib at the Blues boss after Mourinho opted not to call on the striker.

Asked about the incident after the game, Mourinho told BT Sport that he has “no issue” with Costa but insisted that the forward will need to perform at a high level if he is to break back into the first-team.

Mourinho said: “If he (Costa) watched the game with some attention from the bench he will know what is needed from him.”

Sunday’s result left Chelsea in 14th place in the Premier League table and 14 points behind leaders Manchester City after 14 games of the new season.
