Juan Mata has told Memphis Depay that he must be patient as he gets to grips with English football following his transfer to Manchester United in the summer.

The Netherlands international has endured a mixed start to life in England following his big-money switch from PSV Eindhoven at the start of the summer.

Depay has found himself on the bench for Louis van Gaal’s men in recent weeks but was restored to the starting line-up against Watford on Saturday and marked his return to the team by netting a sublime volley to help United secure a 2-1 win.

The Dutchman will now be looking to prove himself on a regular basis and hold down a spot in the Red Devils’ starting line-up.

But Mata has urged Depay that he will need to be patient as he adapts to the rigours of the Premier League in the coming weeks and months.

“Memphis has just arrived at United but last year he was spectacular with PSV and I think that’s why he has been put on the [Goal 50] list,” Mata told Goal.

“He’s already scored a lot and he has a great future ahead of him. He’s not playing a lot but he must be patient because he’s young and has great talent.”
