Juan Mata believes that Manchester United will have to build from the back if the Red Devils are to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Mata hit United’s second goal as Louis van Gaal’s men closed the gap to leaders Manchester City back down to two points with a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

United have now kept five clean sheets in a row in all competitions and continued their recent run of shut-outs against the Baggies.

And Mata feels that the Red Devils’ defensive stability will be key to Van Gaal’s side challenging for the title this season.

Mata wrote on his blog on Kicca: “We face the international break in good spirits, feeling that we are working well and convinced that our game will get better. Besides, we got another clean sheet.

“Our defensive streak is very good after four consecutive Premier League games unbeaten. Being solid will make us strong when things get tough.”

Mata continued: “We have to make a positive assessment of the game against West Brom, a squad with former team-mates that made things complicated for us.

“Jesse Lingard’s goal showed our way to the victory and I was lucky to close the score later on. It was his first goal with the first team and here I congratulate him again.”

United return to Premier League action with a trip to Watford after the international break on Saturday 21 November.

The 27-year-old Mata has scored four goals and made three assists in 12 Premier League games so far this season.
