Klopp delivers latest Liverpool injury update after Swansea win
Jurgen Klopp says Philippe Coutinho should be available for Liverpool's League Cup clash with Southampton on Wednesday
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Philippe Coutinho should be back available for Liverpool’s League Cup quarter-final at Southampton on Wednesday night.
The Brazilian playmaker missed the Europa League win over Bordeaux on Thursday night and also sat out Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League victory over Swansea City at Anfield.
However, Coutinho, who has made 12 Premier League appearances this term, returned to training last week and Klopp revealed that he is expecting the 23-year-old to be fit to face the Saints in midweek.
Speaking at his post-match news conference at Anfield, Klopp said: “I think so, yes [Coutinho should be fit to face Southampton].
“Philippe had a very intensive session yesterday but we decided two or three days ago that we didn’t want to risk [him] for this game.
“Now I think he’s fit. I saw him in the dressing room and he looks good. I’ll have to talk with him tomorrow – I think he’s ready for Southampton.”
Klopp was addressing the media after watching his Liverpool side secure a 1-0 win over the Swans at Anfield thanks to James Milner’s 62nd-minute penalty on Merseyside.
The win lifted the Reds up to sixth place in the Premier League table and two points behind fifth-placed Tottenham.
Liverpool travel to Newcastle United in their next Premier League game on Sunday afternoon.
