Jurgen Klopp has refused to reveal whether Daniel Sturridge will play a part in Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The England international has been sidelined since the 1-1 Merseyside derby draw with Everton last month but returned to full training this week ahead of Saturday’s showdown.

Klopp insisted that he would not rush the forward – who underwent hip surgery over the summer – back to action too soon, but expressed his delight at seeing the striker closing in on a return.

Klopp told a news conference at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground on Thursday afternoon: “Of course he is not at 100 per cent, so now we will have to see. I don’t know what I will do tomorrow when I name the squad. I have to think about it.

“His quality is outstanding, we don’t have to talk about it, but like everybody he needs training.

“Today was his third full exercise with the team after four-and-a-half to five weeks’ break.

“But as a striker sometimes five minutes are enough, so we’ll have to see. I have to decide this tomorrow – and I’ll start thinking about it after the press conference.”

The Reds boss also delivered a Liverpool injury update on the fitness of Jordan Henderson, who is currently recovering from a metatarsal problem. The England international will not be fit for the trip to City but is in line to return to full training at Melwood next week.

“[Henderson] is in a really good way,” said Klopp. “Next week, maybe parts of team training, we will see. But he’s in a really good way.”

Meanwhile, both James Milner and Kolo Toure have recovered from hamstring injuries to be in contention to feature when Liverpool take on the Premier League leaders on Saturday evening. Jordan Ibe has also been passed fit after shaking off a knee problem.

The German coach also revealed that Mamadou Sakho’s knee injury is not as serious as first feared.

He continued: “Mama is good news. It’s not that serious as we thought in the first moment.

“We don’t want to give you a time – you can ask every day – but it’s not Christmas 2016! So that’s good. Between now and 2016! [Laughs] It’s good news, it’s not too serious.”

Jordan Rossiter will miss the trip to City due to a hamstring complaint, but the midfielder is almost ready to re-join the squad at Melwood, with Klopp predicting that he will return to training on Sunday.
