Louis van Gaal has admitted that he does not yet know what Anthony Martial’s best position is.

The Dutchman has been forced to question his strikers’ performances in recent weeks after the Red Devils were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The stalemate marked United’s third successive game without scoring a goal following 0-0 draws with Middlesbrough and Manchester City.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger labelled Martial as a winger despite the 19-year-old’s impressive initial performances up front for United.

Now, it appears Van Gaal is having his own doubts about what position Martial is best suited to.

Van Gaal told a news conference on Monday afternoon: “We don’t know (Martial’s best position) yet because he played always in Monaco as a left winger, as manager I have to see what is the best balance in the team,” the Dutchman said.

“That’s not so simple, so I have to decide every week dependable on the game plan and qualities of opponent, and so on. In Monaco he played more or less always on the left wing.”

Wenger, meanwhile, said at a news conference back in September: “We [have] known him since he was a kid. But he’s more of a winger-type.”
