Louis van Gaal confirms fresh Man United injury blow
Louis van Gaal confirms that Marouane Fellaini missed Manchester United's win over West Brom due to injury
Louis van Gaal has confirmed that Marouane Fellaini missed Manchester United’s victory over West Bromwich Albion after picking up a late injury in the build-up to the game.
No further details about the Belgian’s setback have been disclosed by Van Gaal or the club, but the problem caused him to miss the 2-0 victory over the Baggies at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
United confirmed the news via their official Twitter account on Saturday afternoon.
Speaking to MUTV prior to Saturday’s game, Van Gaal said of Fellaini: “I had hoped he’d recover but it was not like that.”
And when quizzed about his decision to bring Cameron Borthwick-Jackson into his side after the victory at Old Trafford, the Dutchman added: “Yesterday, I knew that Marouane Fellaini was injured, so I talked with [Under-21s coach] Warren Joyce and asked what he had for me.”
Fellaini has been a regular fixture in Van Gaal’s first team this season, with the 27-year-old making six Premier League appearances and featuring three times in the Champions League.
Van Gaal’s men took the lead through Jesse Lingard early in the second half at Old Trafford, before Juan Mata converted his penalty to make the points secure late on.
The result left the Red Devils in fourth place in the Premier League table and one point behind leaders Manchester City, who face Aston Villa on Sunday.
