Louis van Gaal: I expected more from this new Man United signing
Louis van Gaal discusses Memphis Depay's difficult first few months at Manchester United
Louis van Gaal has revealed his disappointment at Memphis Depay’s impact since joining Manchester United in the summer.
The 21-year-old has failed to produce consistent performances for the Red Devils since his arrival at the club from PSV Eindhoven in the summer transfer window.
Depay was left on the bench for United’s 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion two weeks after falling down the pecking order under manager Van Gaal.
However, the Netherlands international will be hoping for a chance to prove himself when Manchester United take on Watford on Saturday afternoon.
Van Gaal insists that Depay is training hard but admits that it is time he started to deliver on the pitch for the Red Devils.
Van Gaal told a news conference at Carrington on Friday: “Of course [I expected more], otherwise he would still be in the team.
“Otherwise I wouldn’t look for another solution, and I have looked for another solution in my team.
“I have kept Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira, for example, for that option, so now he has to fight back and he does it, so I’m satisfied. He is always looking very good in training.
“There’s always a chance [he can play]. But I have to see and compare players.”
Depay has made a total of 14 appearances in all competitions for Van Gaal’s side so far this season.
United are currently fourth in the Premier League table.
