Louis van Gaal issues Man United rallying cry ahead of Wolfsburg showdown
Louis van Gaal insists Manchester United are capable of winning at Wolfsburg
Louis van Gaal insists Manchester United are capable of winning at Wolfsburg in their Champions League group-stage decider.
The Red Devils were unable to secure a victory over PSV Eindhoven that would have sealed their passage to the knockout phase on Wednesday night after a goalless draw.
Van Gaal’s side have failed to win either of their away fixtures in Group B this season after a 2-1 loss to PSV and a 1-1 draw with CSKA Moscow in Russia last month.
Wolfsburg are currently top of the Group following the Bundesliga outfit’s 2-0 win at CSKA last night, but United manager Van Gaal was in bullish mood when asked about his side’s chances of progressing.
“We are still second and are still in the qualifying position,” Van Gaal told his post-match media conference.
“We have to win in Wolfsburg and that’s a difficult game, but everything is possible, it is never impossible. We won at home against them, so why can’t we win away? We can win everywhere.
“We prove it this year. Also in the Premier League, our average in away matches is much higher than last year. And we have to do that also in the Champions League.”
The Red Devils struggled to create any clear-cut chances against the Eredivisie champions as Jesse Lingaard wasted a good first-half opportunity at Old Trafford.
France international Morgan Schneiderlin also had a close-range attempt saved by PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet after half-time.
