Louis van Gaal has called for Manchester United’s fans to get fully behind their team as the Red Devils look to return to winning ways by beating CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils extended their run without scoring a goal to five hours at the weekend as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Saturday’s stalemate followed goalless draws with Middlesbrough and Manchester City.

Van Gaal acknowledges that his side have been failing to perform in recent weeks but has urged the Red Devils faithful to get fully behind their team as they turn their attentions back to the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Van Gaal told his news conference on Monday afternoon: “We have had a dip in our results and we have to come out of that dip.

“That’s why we need the support of the fans and we have always received this support until now.

“But I hope, in spite of a lot of discussions, they shall support my players because my players have to do it. It is much more difficult to perform on the pitch than what I do, coaching.

“The players have to do it so the fans have to support the players. But I am very happy with that because the fans have always done that and I hope they will be the 12th player tomorrow again.”

United’s draw with Palace left them fourth in the Premier League table and four points behind leaders Manchester City after five games.
