Louis van Gaal has urged Manchester United’s fans to direct their frustrations at him and not his players as the Red Devils gear up for their home clash with West Bromwich Albion this weekend.

The Red Devils head into the game after coming in for criticism for their failure to score a goal in three games before Wayne Rooney netted the winner against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League in midweek.

Sections of the Old Trafford faithful voiced their discontent during the game before Rooney’s late winner against the Russian side.

However, Van Gaal says that he would rather United’s fans aim their frustrations at him rather than his players.

Van Gaal told a news conference at United’s Carrington training ground on Friday afternoon: “Yes I think supporters have to support the players or they make it difficult for the players to play at Old Trafford.

“Up to now they have been fantastic so I can’t complain at the fans. I can only advise the fans to criticise the manager and not players. It’s very difficult to play for Manchester Utd with a lot of pressure.

“And when you can taste it in Old Trafford because of all the yelling, it’s not good for my players.

“Then it’s better to whistle the manager, I can cope with it. I have a lot of experience.”

United head into Saturday’s game in fourth place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City after 11 matches. They were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace last weekend.
